Grace Baptist Church & BRMC team up for Haiti

Grace Baptist Church and Barrow Regional Medical Center joined forces to send medical supplies to Haiti this past week. Becky Bachman, an ICU nurse at Barrow Regional and a member at Grace Baptist in Dacula, coordinated the project. The medical supplies will go to Missionary Flights International, which operates medical clinics in Haiti, directed by Dr. Claude Paultre and his wife who is a nurse.

“Barrow Regional Medical Center wanted to help the victims and volunteers in Haiti in any way we could,” said Srav Meka, Director of Marketing at Barrow Regional. "We have a very compassionate and caring staff at BRMC that was eager to find some way to assist the victims of the earthquake."

Jackie Haney and Don Hammond, employees in the materials management department at Barrow Regional, collected the medical supplies which Bachman picked up on Thursday, January 21st. Among the supplies collected were gloves, bandages, alcohol swabs, surgical pads, syringes, sponges, gauze, IV filters, leg splints, plaster bandages and suture needles and threads. The materials were transported from Winder to Ft. Pierce, Florida on Thursday, and on Friday were flown to Haiti on a military transport.  

In the last week, many news stories detailed problems that medical personnel in Haiti ran into because they had to re-use medical equipment and materials that are meant to be one-time use only. In the limited capacity that the doctors and nurses are operating under in Haiti, this will increase chance for infection and delay healing time for the victims. Donated medical supplies can alleviate this risk.

“We are honored to be a part of this relief effort and hope our medical supplies and other items will provide some comfort and relief to those in Haiti affected by this tragedy,” said Blake Watts, Barrow Regional Medical Center CEO.

Linda Glazier, RN, and Lisa Cardinale, RN, both nurses in the ICU at Barrow Regional Medical Center, also participated in a relief effort that collected and donated clothing for victims of the earthquake.
